The apps were built using the Windows Universal Platform in a partnership with the PGA. At the moment, they are being used on over 800 devices within the PGA with a plan to distribute the apps to 1,300 users before the end of 2016.

We understand the PGA employs around 300 folks for each event to help collect statistics each year. Microsoft has created three specified apps to help volunteers collect data on these fronts.

One of the apps is called “Walking Scorer” and it is designed to allow volunteers to change course and player data on the go. The next app is called ‘Laser Operator’ and it was made to gather data from laser-based sensors on the green.

Bear in mind that these apps only support Windows 10 devices.

“Fans want to be able to see each drive, approach shot and putt in real-time and compare tournaments,” said Steve Evans, SVP and Chief Information Officer, PGA TOUR. “Technology plays a key role in making that a reality across any digital device, but using modern day technology doesn’t stop with us providing interesting and fun user experiences. It’s also about using technology like Windows 10 to drive PGA TOUR operations to deliver a better experience for our employees, our players and our fans around the world.”

In the coming years, the PGA Tour will continue to integrate Microsoft products into its business. Azure and Office 365 are big on the agenda going forward. We would love to see how these services are integrated to make for a better golf experience. Azure will likely play a bigger role seeing as it is the backbone of Microsoft’s cloud offerings.
