Microsoft has been struggling for years to compete with popular gaming platforms such as Steam. We can list a number of reasons why the gaming community prefers Steam over the Windows Store.

We can not deny the fact that the lack of support for mods is one of them.

Gamers have always wanted to get mod support for PC. Unfortunately, games available on Windows Store does not offer this most demanded functionality. Well, Microsoft is planning to bring mod support for Windows 10.

Reddit users spotted a new folder named ModdableWindowsApps in Program Files. This folder was added after the installation of the latest Windows 10 update.

However, it seems like the mod support is restricted to few games available on the Windows Store.

Microsoft explains the feature in the following manner:

PC gamers avoid purchasing games from Windows Store

Redditors are glad to know that Microsoft is finally working on the functionality. Some PC gamers think that mod support should be available for at least all the popular titles.

A folder under the ProgramFilesModifiableWindowsApps path [has been added], where the contents of your desktop application’s install folder are projected so that users can modify the installation files (for example, to install mods). This element is currently intended to be used only by certain types desktop of PC games that are published by Microsoft and our partners.

It looks like some people don’t like the idea of purchasing games from the Windows Store.

Which is nice for other games, but I wouldn’t get your hopes up for The Outer Worlds. It’s built on UE 4, which is not particularly mod friendly, and the extra work to release a GECK-like kit for end users is a significant undertaking.

It remains to be seen if Microsoft provides the list of games that will be compatible with mods. We will let you know once more details are available. Keep visiting WindowsReport for the latest updates.

So far tried like 10 ways to do so and in typical fashion Windows 10 tells me I totally have rights to modify files except I don’t and can’t change a simple text file to attempt fix the mess the game is atm.

Pretty happy with the game pass otherwise but I don’t think I’ll ever buy a game from them since having Microsoft Store created issues on top of game issues will be a constant risk.
