Microsoft recently confirmed that it’s producing another variant of Windows 10: Pro for Workstations. One of the essential features of the upcoming build is that it would lift particular limits found in the regular Pro version. We’re referring to up to four processors (Pro had 2) and 6TB of RAM (Pro had 2TB).

ReFS, the modern file system, the last feature in Pro for Workstations

ReFS includes integrated checksums to detect data corruption and, combined with storage spaces, it can automatically reconstruct damaged data.

Windows 10 Pro already supports ReFS and can be used to create ReFS volumes on Storage Spaces. ReFS is not bootable yet but the file system itself is supported, and it also works.

The Fall Creators Update will lack the ability to create volumes using the new ReFS file system from Windows 10 Pro. The existing volumes will keep working, but Windows 10 Pro will not be able to build new ones anymore.

Windows 10 Enterprise and Windows 10 Pro for Workstations will be the only versions of Windows 10 that will have the ability to create ReFS volumes.

Developing capabilities comparable with ReFS for the high-end market

Microsoft has been working on developing some similar capabilities to ReFS, Storage Spaces, and Storage Spaces Direct. On the other hand, they have been restricted to the server version of Windows. This means that the new abilities are now targeted at the high-end market (which is, of course, high-priced), and they will become less useful for the regular user, and this is not exactly what Microsoft should have aimed for.
