Microsoft published a new patent that describes how the company is planning to get rid of the display crease problem in foldable smartphones.

Previously, Samsung and Huawei failed in their attempts to launch foldable smartphones. Now, Microsoft described two methods that can be used to design foldable displays.

Both these methods aim to serve the same purpose, namely eliminate display crease. This will be done by keeping a specific folding radius.

The company describes the first method to implement the folding display technology as follows:

The computing device includes a flexible display including a thin film transistor matrix having a front surface and a back surface.

As we can see in Figure 9, 10 and 11, Microsoft used an interlocking lattice structure in the first implementation.

Here is how Microsoft describes the second method of implementation.

Figure 16 and 17 shows that the tech giant used various interlocking hinge arms to implement the method.

Microsoft is working on a dual-display Surface device

Both of these ideas seem interesting. Microsoft is determined to stick to its software services. As a result, the company is not at all interested in putting more effort into the smartphone branch.

According to some reports, Microsoft is working on a dual-display Surface device. As of now, there is no official word from Microsoft.

This newly proposed design may be implemented on future Surface devices, possible on the elusive Surface smartphone. Let us wait and see what the future brings to Surface devices.
