Overheating is one of the oldest problems in the tech world. From smartphones and tablets, to laptops and desktop PCs, all present the same performance issues when they heat up.
Luckily, Microsoft is trying to address this problem in a innovative way and with new technologies. WIPO has published a patent that shows how Microsoft intends to solve the heating problem.
Microsoft’s patent could solve the everlasting overheating problem
The Redmond giant is working on a thermal control system designed for laptops, desktops, gaming consoles, tablets, and others.
Between a lot of technicalities, here’s how Microsoft describes the cooling process:
In simpler words, the patented control system will take multiple measurements to determine the power load, and then control the temperature of a device based on those measurements with the help of a cooling mechanism.
The method comprising determining a measure of a power load of the device, determining an adjustment to make to a cooling mechanism control variable by computationally combining at least a setpoint-dependent term that is based on a comparison of a thermal setpoint to a current temperature and a setpoint-independent term that is based on the measure of the power load of the device, and adjusting the response of the cooling mechanism based on the adjustment determined
Of course, this is just a patent and we’ll have to wait and see if Microsoft actually implements it. The tech giant has lots of those going around.
Let’s hope that this won’t remain just a great idea, as a future without heating problems sound pretty amazing right now.
