Microsoft is always interested in how they can improve Bing so that it becomes a real alternative to Google. In the past, we’ve seen such new features as encrypted traffic, the launch of the Bing Insider Program, the Concierge Bot and others.
The Bing Team announced recently that Microsoft’s search engine is launching more intelligent search features, as follows:
- More answers that include relevant information across multiple sources – Bing now aggregates facts for given topics across several sites for you, somewhat similar to what Google is doing with Rich Snippets.
- Hover-over definitions for uncommon words – if you stumble upon a word that isn’t common knowledge, Bing will now show you its definition when you hover over with the cursor. This is especially useful with professional terms, such as medicine and others.
- Multiple answers for how-to questions – in this new feature, Bing Insiders had a say. The ability to view a variety of answer options has made the Bing Team ready to shipp answers for how-to questions. This is quite tricky, as many how-to questions don’t have a precise answer.
- More opportunities to search within an image – The intelligent image search has been updated with smarter functionality, allowing you to search within an image to find similar images and products.

In order to deliver these new updates in intelligent search, Microsoft has partnered with Intel for machine reading comprehension at scale. The two companies have developed together Project Brainwave, which runs deep neural networks and immense computational power.
