Microsoft Officially Announces Windows 8 1 Update

As expected, at the Build 2014 event currently taking place in the Moscone Center, San Francisco, Microsoft has announced the first updated to Windows 8.1. Albeit the update has leaked before, it now has become official, so read below for more details.

The Spring Update, as it was previously called, it’s finally here and it brings new features to Windows 8.1. The Windows 8.1 Update comes just five months after Windows 8.1 itself has been released. Microsoft also brought a pretty big update to Windows Phone 8, releasing Windows Phone 8.1 with a new action center, voice assistant Cortana and other new features. Joe Belfiore, the corporate vice president and manager for Windows Phone and Windows Program Management at Microsoft has just unveiled the first update to Windows 8.1.

Windows 8.1 update comes with mouse and keyboard improvements, and finally, the minimize button works inside modern apps. Also, switching between Win 32 and modern apps is now also possible form a single place. The Start center comes with a the PC Settings tiles and the power button. Right mouse click features have also been added to the Start screen.

Belfiore also said that a future update will be applied to the Windows Store with enhanced support for mouse and keyboard and it will also be prepinned to the taskbar. There’s now the ability to pin Windows Store apps to the bottom of the screen, along with traditional legacy programs. The new power and search buttons in the upper-right corner of the Start screen will prove to be really helpful to the users. Also, when you install a new app from the Windows Store, you’ll see an arrow at the bottom of the Start Screen with a message that says something like, “12 new apps installed.”

Naturally, various other performance improvements and bug fixes have been put in place, and the Process Lifetime Manager in Windows more aggressively suspends apps to reclaim memory. Also, Microsoft improved compatibility with Internet Explorer 11 with the new Enterprise Mode feature. Perhaps the Windows 8.1 Update doesn’t sound as great as we were expecting it to be, but it’s good to see some minor annoyances being taken care off.
