Microsoft Is Looking For Developers To Bring Containers To Windows 10

When we presented the new Technical Preview for Windows Server 2016, we noticed that Microsoft brought Hyper-V containers to its latest operating system for servers. And now, it looks like Microsoft plans to do the same thing with Windows 10, as the company opened a job post to search for developers who will bring containers to Windows 10.

Containers support on Windows 10 will allow you to run a program in a file system separated from the rest of the operating system, so a container can’t affect critical system files.

Microsoft opened a job listing in order to find quality developers who will get the job done and introduce container support to Windows 10. Job listing on Microsoft’s website cites:

“There are a large number of client focused scenarios, currently unannounced, where Containers form the core pivotal technology providing security, isolation and roaming ability,” the publicly accessible job description reportedly said. “To deliver this, we are creating a new team with a mission to impact client computing in the same revolutionary manner we are changing the datacenter.”

Gathering a team of developers indicates that Microsoft plans to build this feature, but we have to note that the company still didn’t release any official word about the feature. Actually, when asked by ZDNet reporter, Microsoft representative had no comments regarding bringing containers to Windows.

We still don’t have any idea how running containers on Windows 10 would look like, but this feature could significantly improve the security of the system. For example, imagine running a web browser of email client app in the container; Any virus or malware infections you ‘pick up’ during the browsing or opening suspicious email will have no impact on your system.

For now, we have a few third-party programs like Sandboxie, which brings a feature similar to containers to Windows, but running a built-in Windows feature would definitely be something special.
