It is well known that Microsoft has some problems with certain carriers, when it comes to delivering updates. So, it looks like the Redmond based company decided to overcome this problem by releasing its own SIM card.

Although Microsoft didn’t announce its plans for the service yet, the app called “Cellular Data” has been released on the Windows Store. Apparently, Cellular Data will allow customers with a “Microsoft SIM card” and a proper Windows 10 device to purchase mobile data through the Windows Store.

Thus, Windows 10 users will be able to access a range of different cellular networks, without needing a contract. And since Microsoft plans to sell its cellular data through the Windows Store, we assume that the data will be tied to a Microsoft Account.

Will Microsoft launch its own mobile network?

Here’s how the description of the app sounds like:

“Connect with – and pay for – a mobile data plan on your Windows 10 device using only your Microsoft account information. That means no fixed contract and no long term commitments to a mobile network operator. Now you can buy and use mobile data at your own convenience.

This is the easiest way to get online using a trusted nationwide network. Purchase a plan via Windows Store anywhere network coverage is available. The Cellular data app can get you connected at any time with a secure, high-speed mobile connection. This app is designed to work solely with specific Windows 10 devices and requires a Microsoft SIM card.”

Here are the main features of the app, as well:

  • Get online anywhere regardless of Wi-Fi availability
  • Purchase cellular data when and where you need it – no fixed contracts
  • Experience a more secure network using cellular connectivity
  • Get in control of cost and data usage by checking your balance in real-time

The Cellular Data app is present in the Windows Store already, and it indicates which services will Microsoft offer in the future, but there’s no official word about the actual release of Microsoft SIM cards, or the pricing plan for cellular data packages. We also still don’t know which career will partner with Microsoft to make this service possible.

That’s pretty much all we know about possible Microsoft Sim cards, but we’ll keep an eye on future announcements and news, so we’ll update you with the latest news.
