When it comes to smartphones, you’ve got just about a handful of them at the moment half of which are for proprietary use only like Huawei’s HiSilicon and Samsung’s Exynos chipset. Most of the chipset you’ll see on other smartphones are either MediaTek or Qualcomm. Between those two chipset makers, MediaTek is known to be the SoC for budget smartphones. In fact, it caters for only budget smartphones ranging from entry-level to mid-range.
At the moment the legitimate gaming smartphones are all high-end ones and are very pricey. Since MediaTek is only present in the lesser-priced smartphones, the Taiwanese chipmaker is looking to expand this niche to include gaming smartphones by offering a SoC that suits the budget. The core of a smartphone is the SoC and a fast way to check the category a smartphone belongs to is by finding out the chipset that is on the smartphone. Therefore, the Helio G90 series will usher in an era of gaming smartphone that costs as low as half of the price of the current ones.

The new chipset will be looking to square off with Qualcomm’s SD730 & SD730G which MediaTek claims it performs better than in Antutu benchmarks by three and seven percent. Alongside the Helio G90 and Helio G90T, MediaTek also introduced an HyperEngine Game Technology which would make gaming on a budget much better. This is good news considering that you will soon be able to own a gaming smartphone without having to part with much.
This series includes the MediaTek Helio G90 and Helio G90T with the latter being the more powerful of the duo. Both of them have eight cores just like most of other latest chipsets but with a 12nm process, The Helio G90 and Helio G90T have two high performing Cortex-A76 cores and six other Cortex A55 cortex for average functions. similar to what we have on the Helio P90. They also have two APUs with a 750MHz clock rate and support for UFS 2.1 or eMMC5.1 storage types as well as FullHD+ display support. However, while Helio G90 can only support up to 60Hz refresh rate, Helio G90T does support 90Hz refresh rate.
The major feature here is the ARM Mali-G76 GPU with 720MHz clock speed for Helio G90 and 800MHz clock speed for G90T. This in combination with HyperEngine Game tech is said to boost gaming remarkably. Part of the features includes double WiFi connection, HDR10 support, and resource management to get the most out of gaming. Xiaomi promises to release a smartphone with the new gaming chipset and you can also expect other OEMs like Tecno, Oppo or Infinix to follow suit in the future.
