If your Lutron Caseta does not turn off, you might be wondering whether it was worth getting in the first place. However, there are a few tricks that could remedy your problem, all of which take a few moments of your time.
You can either reset the device or turn off the switch’s power supply. The issue might not even be with your device but your home’s actual wiring grid. Continue reading to learn more about troubleshooting your device and what measures could help you.
What to Do if Lutron Caseta Will Not Turn Off
If your Lutron Caseta dimmer does not turn off, try the following troubleshooting tips:
Reset the Device
On the bottom of your Lutron Caseta dimmer, right underneath the little lightbulb icon, there’s a pull tab. Using your fingernail or a flathead screwdriver, pull the tab toward you. This will not only turn off the lights, but it will cut off power to the light switch altogether.
Wait a few moments, then push the tab back in. Now, turn the light on, then off again. If you don’t get the desired results, proceed to the next troubleshooting step.
Cut the Power to the Light Switch
You can do this by opening your home’s fuse box, locating the switch that powers your lights, then turning it on and off again. If your Lutron Caseta still won’t turn off, then you know it’s an issue with the device and not your home’s grid.
Make Sure Your Lights Have Dimming Capabilities
Not all lightbulbs are created equal. If you’ve continuously run into this problem, it could be a problem with your lightbulbs; they might not have the ability to turn off all the way.
To check if your lightbulbs have this feature, click on this link. You’ll need to select what type of Lutron Caseta dimmer you have.
Note: Lutron Dimmers work best with LED lights. This isn’t a requirement––in fact, you could use any dollar-store bulb with your device. However, LED lightbulbs generally come with dimming capabilities.
Switch to Incandescent Lightbulbs
While Lutron products work great with LED lights, this isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution. You might be running into a problem called “ghosting,” where your LED lights look as though they’re still on because electrical residue is still flowing through them. Incandescent bulbs do not have this problem.
By switching out your bulbs, you could fix your issue. While changing the bulbs, be sure to pull out your dimmer’s pull tab or shut off power to the device. This is for your safety.
Install a Lutron Capacitor
Your home’s wiring grid might be giving too much power to the lightbulbs, so it looks like they never really turn off. To remedy this issue, you’ll have to get a Lutron capacitor. Basically, this appliance controls how much power goes to your lightbulbs.
How you install this device depends on your home’s electrical grid and what dimmer you purchased. You’ll need to shut off the power to your light switch, unscrew the faceplate, and then wire the capacitor in yourself. Click here to learn more about how to do this.
Check Your Dimmer’s Schedule
You might have set your lights to turn on and off at a specific time. While you should be able to control your lights by flipping the switch, you might have accidentally set a schedule in the Lutron app. This could cause your lights to randomly turn on at certain times of the day.
You can check your lights’ schedules by opening the Lutron app and clicking on the “Schedules” tab. Here, you’ll be able to see and disable any inconvenient settings.

You generally have one year from the date of purchase to do this. However, certain exceptions could apply. If Lutron finds that a factory-specific problem caused your issue, they could repair or replace your device at no charge.
