LIFX is Philips Hue Lights’s competitor. Unfortunately, the company decided to drop support for its Windows 10 app. LIFX is one of the few official smart home apps for Windows 10, and it stopped development for the OS. This and the fact that users seem to have always had lots of troubles using LIFX’s Windows 10 app, made a Reddit user come up with a solution – an open source alternative for the LIFX app for Windows 10.
Meet LIFX-Control-Panel
The Reddit user created this app after working with members of r/LIFX in order to improve the software. He says that all the app’s core feature are working properly, but feedback is always welcomed.
You can download the open source LIFX-Control-Panel from GitHub, and it’s best to download the latest version even if it’s beta.
I still would appreciate a larger audience to test the software, on as many different machines and devices as possible. I’m sure many of us know how unpredictable some of these smart objects can be, and I want to make sure my software is as robust and usable as possible.
User feedback
Another user then suggested the app still has room for improvements:
More users downloaded the app, and they are pleased with how it works. “I just gave it a whirl and wow, is this thing responsive! Changes take effect immediately. The eyedropper is also impressive; I can pick anything visible on screen to match. Pretty neat, nice work.
The app creator seemed open to try implementing this in the future, so we’ll have to wait and see. Meanwhile, head over to GitHub and get the app to try it out for yourselves.
I guess if I had any suggestions, it’d be a nice to define my own presets. Also if you really wanted to get fancy, allow it to run in the background (as a system tray icon) and let me set up keyboard shortcuts to activate presets. Ooh and maybe a way to have presets affect multiple lights at once.
