Microsoft’s Surface Pro arguably leads the 2-in-1 detachable market, but Lenovo is trying to change the competitive landscape with the launch of the Miix 720 that comes with the new Active Pen 2 at CES 2017.

The latest version of the Active Pen shows off 4,096 levels of pressure sensitivity to provide a writing/drawing experience as though you were creating directly on paper. Lenovo explains:

Along with the $59.99 Active Pen 2, the Miix 720 also sports a 12-inch display with Gorilla Glass protection and a resolution of 2880 x 1920, comparable to Microsoft’s Surface Pro 4 — meaning the detachable’s sharpness level won’t disappoint. Intel’s Kaby Lake processor also powers the device. Other key features include an integrated Intel HD Graphics 620, up to 16GB of RAM, and up to 1TB of PCIe SSD storage.

“Like most of us, the process of drawing and writing with a pen helps you frame content in a way that makes it more memorable and meaningful. Lenovo’s commitment to creating smarter pens is based in large part on a growing body of research demonstrating that digital pens are better suited to intrinsic human cognition, including conceptualizing, prototyping, sketching, memorizing, and good old-fashioned brainstorming.”

On the optics side, the Miix 720 totes a pair of cameras: a 5-megapixel rear camera and a 1-megapixel front-facing infrared camera that you can use to unlock your PC in conjunction with Windows Hello and facial recognition.

Lenovo also squeezed a precision touchpad and backlit keyboard into the device along with a kickstand with dual hinges. The detachable is 14.6mm thick because of the keyboard and weighs 2.4lbs overall. With a 41WHr battery, the Miix 720 can stay up for up to 8 hours.

On the connectivity side of things, the device features a USB Type-C port, a USB 3.0, USB 2.0 connector, and a built-in 2×2 802.11ac Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.1.

Available in Champagne Gold and Iron Gray color options, the Miix 720 runs either Windows 10 Home or Pro and sports a price tag of $999.99. The device will go on sale in April.
