Made In Abyss started as a manga series by Akhihito Tsukushi, became a serialized digital publication in 2012, and was adapted into a TV series in 2017. In 2020, a movie sequel was released in Japan. A video game is slated for release sometime in 2022, as well as a second anime season.
Made In Abyss tells the story of the orphan girl Riko, who lives in the town of Orth. In the middle of town, there’s a giant hole called the Abyss, which holds relics of past civilizations. Cave Raiders go to the Abyss to hunt for these relics, but the “Curse of the Abyss” makes it a dangerous task. The most successful Cave Raiders become “White Whistles.”
Riko’s mother was a White Whistle lost to the Abyss, and Riko wants to be a White Whistle just like her. The series follows Riko’s growth and grief as she follows in her mother’s footsteps.
Made In Abyss came in eighth place as a nominee for the Manga Taisho Awards, and got positive reviews with Anime News Network for its storytelling, artwork, and music.
